Form and Function
It is the pervading law of all things organic and inorganic,
Of all things physical and metaphysical,
Of all things human and all things super-human,
Of all true manifestations of the head,
of the heart, of the soul,
That the life is recognizable in its expression,
That form ever follows function. This is the law.
Louis Sullivan - The Tall Office Building Artistically Considered - 1896
Form is what the building will look like.
Function is what the building will be used for.
Does form follow function or does function follow form, the eternal question.
Form follows Function:
A building is designed with only its use in mind, and not it's look eg. housing for people with a limited budget who need a roof over their heads and need to get maximum space for their hard earned dollar. It will not look beautiful, but it will not necessarily be ugly.
Function follows Form:
A building is created with a certain look and it's functions are fitted in as best they can be eg. that fabulous looking dream house on the block with the magnificent views. It makes a statement about its owner, it provides a landmark in the area and provides an aesthetically structure to brighten up the neighbourhood.
Both types of building have a reason and a purpose, even though one may be practical but not as pleasing to look at, and one not the most practical but looks like a million dollars. To their owners both they are what they want or need, and therefore, to them, they are beautiful, functional buildings
